I hasten to reply to your communication of the

16th. instant which reached me today. It appears to have been much

delayed in the post.

I would ask you to express my thanks to His

Excellency the Governor for his kindness. My being able to render

any assistance to the officers and others was due partly to my

having some knowledge of the Kwang Tung people and their language,

mainly due to these people knowing I was a missionary.

Owing to these facts we were treated with more

leniency than is customary in such cases. In consideration of the

above I feel my conduct has been too generously estimated.
